Branch of the year award – COA/COF 2008
Submission: Cincinnati COA

Date of Submission: 3/21/2008
Nomination:

The Cincinnati Branch of the Commissioned Officers Association offers the following to support our nomination for Branch of the Year.  We are a cohesive, motivated, and enthusiastic branch who endeavors to fully support our local officers and surrounding community.

We strive to make sure our officers are informed.  Our monthly meetings are very well attended and provide officers from different agencies a chance to connect and be informed about a wide variety of corps related topics (e.g., transformation issues, upcoming physical fitness tests, space A travel experiences).  We are also quite active in keeping our local officers, as well as officers throughout the country, current through our highly successful list serve posts and popular internet site (http://coa.spsp.net/)

Not only do we take care of our members, but strive to serve our local community.  Our branch members recent volunteer efforts include:  community care functions (food drives, local primary school interaction (e.g., science fair judging and tutoring), recruitment to local colleges, assisting our retired officers with a recent  legislative bill, and a variety of fund-raising activities (e.g., providing $500 for the  Derek Dunn Scholarship Fund).

In addition to our day to day activities, our branch had the honor of hosting the 2007 USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium.  To stand up to this truly monumental task, our local officers rose to the occasion in planning and preparing  for this conference, working diligently to promote the symposium and ensure its success.  Cincinnati Commissioned Corps Officers were actively involved in the following:

  • Local symposium planning including pre-event logistics coordination, serving on the COA Scientific Board, and organizing a large number of events tied into the symposium.
  • Organized and executed several complex, yet highly regarded functions including: the COA Evening Social, the Surgeon Generals 5K Run/Walk, and the PHS Golf Scramble.
  • Planned and proctored annual physical fitness exams given as part of the run/walk event.
  • Moderated multiple panel sessions, chaired numerous technical sessions and gave over 15 scientific presentations.
  • Provided category specific local representation for planning and logistics, volunteered and worked in category, branch, and JOAG exhibit booths to include exhibit setup and breakdown.
  • Developed, for the first time ever, a symposium challenge coin.
  • Served as Aide-de Camps for VIPs and senior level officials.
  • Promoted information sharing and conference attendance through periodic updates on the local branch website of the symposium agenda.
  • Promoted the symposium through local public health organization recruitment and fund raising ($7K).

In summary, the Cincinnati COA is a highly successful and motivated group of officers who have diligently worked to serve our fellow officer and the local community through “day to day” activities as well our significant efforts in hosting the 2007 USPHS Scientific and Training Symposium.  Please accept our nomination for Branch of the Year.
