RECOGNIZING the contributions of Captain Derek Dunn of the U.S. Public
Health Service and expressing Council's sympathy to his family upon his
death.
WHEREAS, Captain Dunn attended Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, and
earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of
Cincinnati, as well as being the first ever recipient of a Ph.D. from the
University of Cincinnati's Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders; and
WHEREAS, Captain Dunn made outstanding scientific contributions to the
prevention of occupational hearing loss, specifically conducting studies on
the role of chemical exposure in occupational hearing loss and noise-induced
hearing loss, and published more than forty-two articles related to such
hearing loss; and
WHEREAS, Captain Dunn served as an adjunct professor of hearing sciences at
the University of Cincinnati, Miami University, and the Ohio State
University, as well as serving as a Visiting Scientist at the University of
Lund, Malmo Allmanna Sjukhuset in Malmo, Sweden; and
WHEREAS, Captain Dunn served as the Acting Associate Director for Science
for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as
Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), as Chief Professional
Officer for the Scientist category of the Public Health Service, as
President of the National Commissioned Officers Association, and as chairman
and member of the Scientist Professional Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, Captain Dunn has received more then twenty awards for his work,
including the USPHS Meritorious Service Medal, the Surgeon General's
Exemplary Service Medal, the NIOSH-Cincinnati Supervisor of the Year Award,
the Robert Brutsche Award from the Commissioned Officer Association, 2001
USPHS Career Scientist of the Year, Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UC
Department of Communication Services and from the UC College of Arts and
Sciences, as well as the UC Alumni Association Award for Distinguished
Service; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Cincinnati, State of Ohio:
That this Council recognizes and commends the lifetime contributions of
Captain Derek Dunn.
That this Council expresses its deepest sympathy to his companion of 34
years, his siblings and other family members.
That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of Council and
that a copy be presented to the family of Captain Derek Dunn.
