CDR John Cardarelli II, P.E.
2006 Federal Engineer of the Year
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (February 28, 2006)— CDR John Cardarelli II, P.E., a
health physicist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
working on important issues of public health
research,
has been named the National Society of Professional Engineers’ (NSPE)
2006 Federal Engineer of the Year (FEYA). Cardarelli received the
honor during the 27th Annual FEYA Banquet at the National Press Club
in Washington, D.C., held on February 23, 2006.
Cardarelli recently responded to Hurricane Katrina, taking on
leadership roles with the EPA as both the Air Sampling Group Leader
and an Assistance Safety Officer, where he utilized his engineering
skills to address environmental and safety hazards stemming from the
storm. He has also served as the principal inve stigator
of a national study to determine potential radiation exposures to
Transportation Security Administration screeners. Preliminary
findings were published, along with engineering recommendations that
could reduce radiation exposures by up to 50 percent. Working with
the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the Department of Energy,
he provided technical expertise and leadership on radiological
protection at both the Hot Springs National Park and the waste
storage tanks at the Hanford Tank Farms.
Cardarelli has also excelled academically, achieving the highest
form of recognition and licensure in the fields of engineering (PE),
industrial hygiene (CIH), and health physics (CHP). Since 1991, his
seven peer-reviewed journal articles, 15 technical reports, one book
chapter and Internet Web site have significantly influenced both
research and end-user communities. In addition, he serves on three
national
committees dedicated to protecting workers and the public from
radiation exposures.
Sponsored by NSPE’s practice division, Professional Engineers in
Government (PEG), the award program recognizes outstanding engineers
employed in the federal government. A panel of judges selected the
winner based on education, continuing education, professional and
technical society activities, awards and honors, civic and
humanitarian activities and engineering achievements.
